Halloween Day No Costumes

Due to the fact we offered a Halloween Dance for students to wear costumes, we are not allowing costumes to be worn at school on Halloween day.  Costumes present a distraction to the learning environment at the middle school level.  Thank you for your understanding.

Fall Fundraiser Item Pick-Up

Items for the fall fundraiser are currently scheduled to arrive on November 2.  We will be setting pickup times between 3 and 7 p.m. that day.  It is imperative that all items be picked up on that day as we do not have the freezer space to store it.  If you are unable to pick up items on November 2, we ask that you make arrangements with a friend or relative that may be able to help.  Some of the popcorn and tumblers have arrived and we will distribute these items to the students to bring home.  Not all items have been delivered, but we will have a delivery date estimate on November 2nd.

We do have several orders that were not attached to a specific student.  If your child does not receive their items for distribution or have missing orders, please contact us.

MTSS - Multi-Tiered Systems of Support

Over the course of the beginning of the school year, Kaneland has been focusing on the shift from Response to Intervention (RTI) to Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS).  MTSS consists of pushing in to support students in the classrooms to enhance and remediate learning for students.  The focus on MTSS is expanded to all content and support for behaviors.  The MTSS interventionists co-teach within assigned classrooms and use the six models of co-teaching to best service our students.  MTSS staff and classroom teachers meet and co-plan based on the needs of the students and work on supporting all students through co-teaching.  The benefits of MTSS co-teaching are looking at the whole child within the classroom and supporting them in the learning environment.  Feel free to ask your students about a co-teacher that might be working in their classrooms.  We are excited to continue to support learning through MTSS this year!

Personalized Learning Academy

Registration has opened for the inaugural class at the Personalized Learning Academy!  Registration is already a quarter of the way full!  As a reminder, there are two upcoming IgKnight Academy Open House Informational Sessions.  They will be held on Thursday, October 20th and Thursday, November 17th at the Meredith Road building, just north of Kaneland High School, from 6:00-7:30 p.m.  The evenings will include opening remarks, followed by a tour of four Academy spaces, with information on the differences between personalized and legacy (traditional) instruction, how to determine if IgKnight is right for you, and the opportunity to envision a day in the life of an IgKnight student.  The tour is self-paced, allowing families to spend as little or as much time learning and exploring as they need.

If you have any questions regarding IgKnight Academy registration, please contact Laura Garland, Personalized Learning Coordinator, at 10166@kaneland.org or 630-365-5111  ext. 71127.

Halloween Dance

The Harter Middle School Student Council is sponsoring a Halloween dance on Friday, October 21 from 6:00-8:00 p.m.  All Harter Middle School students are invited to attend and dress in costume.  The best costumes will also win a prize!  Costumes must be school appropriate as outlined in the student handbook and students should not include any toy or fake weapons.  Masks will not be allowed as it is imperative that staff are able to see students' faces.  Face paint is allowed.  Students who wish to bring their mask for the costume contest may do so with the understanding that it will not be worn at any other time during the dance.

Entry to the dance will cost $3 and students must present their ID.  Pizza, snacks, and drinks will be available for purchase.  Only Kaneland Harter Middle School students are allowed to attend the dance.  Students from other middle schools, high schools, or elementary schools will not be allowed to attend.

Halloween Day

Due to the fact we are offering a Halloween Dance, Halloween costumes will not be allowed to be worn to school on Halloween day.  Costumes present a distraction to the learning environment.  Students are asked to attend the Halloween Dance to show off their costumes.

Substitute Information

Have you ever wanted to substitute in your school district?  Subbing is a flexible, convenient, and rewarding opportunity that many can take advantage of.  Getting a substitute certificate can be simple, and once done, there is a significant need for substitute teachers here in Kaneland.  Please follow this link for additional information.

There are two pathways to becoming a substitute teacher

  1. If you hold a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college/university, you may obtain a full substitute license.
  2. If you have an Associates Degree OR sixty (60) credit hours from an accredited college/university, you may obtain a short term substitute license.  The short term substitute license has various limitations and would only be valid until June 30, 2023.

If you are interested in subbing, and qualify under either of the pathways above, simply click on this link to the Educator Licensure Information System (ELIS) and start an account.  Follow the prompts to apply for a Substitute License.  The State will provide you with an email to send official college transcripts to so that you can finalize the process.  Once you have a license issued from the State, please contact the building principal for a screening interview.

If you have any questions, or need any additional information or help, please contact Dr. Chris Adkins, Director of Human Resources at 630-365-4114 or via email at 75522@kaneland.org.

The tentative pick-up date for all fundraising items from the fall fundraiser is November 2.  All frozen items, no matter if sold online or in person will need to be picked up on that day.  Customers that purchased popcorn or tumblers online had a choice between paying extra and having them shipped to their home or shipping them to school for free.  Those items sent to school will also be available for pickup at that time.  Please keep in mind that we do not have freezer space to store frozen product.  If you are unable to pick up the items on November 2, please make arrangements for someone else to pick it up for you.

Students who accumulate at least 30 hours over their career at Harter are recognized at the end of their 8th grade year and are given a Knights of the Round Table chenille shield and certificate of recognition.  If your child is interested in participating in this program, please read the information here.

Kaneland Connects Message

This month, the district has been hard at work on the IgKnight Personalized Learning Academy opening.  The Academy opens August 2023 with early registration opening October 3rd, 2022.  The next IgKnight Personalized Learning Academy Parent Nights will be held October 20th and November 17th.  Please be sure to send any inquiries to KIPLA@kaneland.org.  The district also has been working on collecting evidence to show progression of the five commitments in each of the schools.  We are excited to see the progress of the commitments within each school and hearing from students on progress.  Our Fall SIP data indicated students self-rating themselves at the understanding and application levels at the following percentages per commitment:  Multi Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) 76.9%, 1:1 Learning 72.4%, Proficiency Based Progress (PBP) 76.9%, Standards Based Grading (SBG) 79%, and Social Emotional Learning (SEL) 78.5%.  The district looks forward to the beginning of the student commitment team meetings this month!  If you are interested in serving on a commitment team, please contact Dr. Todd Leden at 11613@kaneland.org.  Be sure to check out the Todd Talks posted on our Kaneland website to learn even more about our Graduate Profile and Five Commitments!

Effort Grade Changing to Commitment to Excellence Grade

You'll notice a change to our Effort Grades that are reported at the end of each Term on our report card.  We are changing the Effort Grade to Commitment to Excellence Grade.  The Commitment to Excellence grade aligns with one of our core values in D302.  Our staff is using similar criteria to help generate this grade and the criteria focuses on effort, completing quality work by the due date, and coming prepared to class with materials.
